The mission of 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East is to advocate for quality healthcare and good jobs for all. With over 450,000 members, we are the nation’s largest and fastest-growing healthcare union.
We worked with the largest national healthcare union in the country to create leadership development training modules for their members to more effectively build power within the organization.
OUR STRATEGY.
Utilizing years of experience in organizing, communications, and digital marketing, we applied proven theories and best practices for cultivating leadership into short modules. We prioritized using approachable, jargon-free language to keep the program accessible to members with varying experience levels. We also worked with fluent Spanish speakers to translate the material into their language.
Guiding our work was a pre-course survey we used to gauge the participants' baseline understanding of organizing and mobilizing and to get a general sense of how they viewed their role within the movement. Taking the results of that survey, we created a course and supplemental materials for use by members at all levels of the union.
OUR EXECUTION.
In collaboration with the client, we created courses that taught relationship building, mobilization, leadership development, team communication, and power analysis. We then trained facilitators from 1199 to assist in delivering the training.
OUR RESULTS.
Since this partnership, the union has adopted this set of training modules to train their membership, creating proficiency in building power and being effective organizers around their key issues.
